Sutter County Sheriff’s Office issues warning on “IRS will arrest you”, and “Grandma I need help” scams

2017 Bullentin Telephone Scams 11-30The Sutter County Sheriff’s Office has issued a warning about the reoccurrence of telephone scams primarily targeting senior citizens. Several individuals have reported to local law enforcement agencies, including the Sheriff’s Department, they have received calls from individuals claiming to be either a representative of the IRS threatening to jail them if they did not immediately pay a purported past due amount, or from someone claiming to be a grandchild in a desperate need for financial assistance for some emergency.

The IRS does not attempt to collect back taxes by telephone. The IRS communicates in writing through the United States mail.

Undersheriff Jeff Pierce said the scams are particularly common around the holidays, when cons are looking for a little extra money.
